The Worcester Park Athletic
Club was founded as a combination of two or
three clubs in the Worcester Park and Cheam
Common region. This was in the early 1920s.
By the 1930s, there were Football, Cricket,
Tennis and Lawn Bowling sections. The Football
Section was a prominent member of the Kingston
& District League and had a wonderful season
1937-1938, winning the Surrey Junior Cup, the
League title & the Teck Cup as well as being
awarded the Sporter Cup.
Both my brothers (Ted and Hugh) played for the
Club in the 1930s, Ted continuing until the
late 1940s after service in the Royal Navy during
the Second World War.
It
is, therefore, essential that the long and distinguished
record of the Club be shown as beginning long,
long before 1982 as per FCHD records.
Most
of the players in the teams that my brothers
played in for the Park are now deceased.
However,
one member, Horace Shrubb and I exchanged correspondence
as recently as 3 years ago.
I
had one but undistinguished season with the
Club in the 1951-1952 season.
Harold
Firth, the Club goalkeeper for many seasons
passed away within the last 3 or so years.
I do not wish to appear a nitpicker but I think
you will agree that the way the record of the
Club is presently shown on the Internet entry
gives the impression that the Football section
has been in existence only since 1982.
Best wishes for the coming season.
